Kirkuk, Iraq:
Car bombs ripped through the Iraqi city of Kirkuk killing at least seven and wounding at least 35 people on Wednesday morning.
The blasts struck outside the headquarters of the Kurdish intelligence forces known as the Asayish, on a highway and near a gas station in southern Kirkuk, 300 kilometers north of Baghdad.
Emergency services raced to the Asayish headquarters when another explosion went off in the area, near a taxicab, knocking people to the ground.
Gunshots could be heard immediately after the blast.
According to the police, the bomb blast on the highway was targeted at a police patrol led by a top commander, Colonel Ahmed Shamerani. Shamerani, however, escaped unhurt.
The oil-rich city of Kirkuk has seen ethnic tensions for a long time now.
