A 94-year-old wheelchair-bound woman was robbed off her pension money after a man slyly pulled out an envelope full of cash from her blouse and fled. A video of the theft was captured by surveillance cameras of the clothing store in Manhattan.
The footage shows the man walking up to the elderly woman and taking away the envelope before she could react. The woman's caretaker raised an alarm but the man managed to get away. He was however arrested by the New York City police later.
The Daily News said the old woman had cashed her Social Security check and was in the store to buy sandals. She had also planned to pay her rent with the money.
She told the newspaper that she had put hundreds of dollars in the envelope, which she had put inside her blouse for safekeeping.
Police has charged 26-year-old Broyoan Lopez, of Brooklyn, with robbery, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. The police say the suspect had observed the woman and followed her into the shop.
