Chicago:

The city of Chicago closed some city services on Monday as part of a reduced-service day in an effort to save some money and shore up its ailing budget.

As part of the 2009 budget, three reduced-service days are planned for 2009; days which are unpaid for all affected employees.

City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices and civil services were closed but emergency service providers such as police, firefighters and paramedics were not affected.

Chicago officials said the reduced-service days should save the city more than eight (m) million US dollars.
