Ottawa:
Canada's SNC-Lavalin and China Nuclear Power Engineering Company announced a deal on Friday to build two nuclear reactors in Romania.
The Candu reactors will be built at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania, which already houses two of the Canadian-designed power plants that produce nearly 20 percent of Romania's electricity supply, according to a statement.
The pair came into service in 1996 and 2007, respectively.
"Candu Energy looks forward to working with CNPEC to meet Romania's growing nuclear energy requirements," said Preston Swafford, president of SNC-Lavalin subsidiary Candu Energy.
"Today's agreement deepens our strong ties with both the Romanian and Chinese nuclear industries, as Candu reactors have operated in both countries for more than a decade."
SNC-Lavalin, Canada's largest engineering company, bought Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Candu sales and servicing division in 2011.
The company and CNPEC also signed a formal memorandum of understanding this week to collaborate on uranium mining projects in China and to jointly pursue other reactor sales opportunities.
