Shanghai:
China has announced that a high speed train has set a new speed record during trials between Shanghai and Hangzhou, highlighting China's leading position in the fast-train industry, Chinese local media reported.
CCTV broadcast video of the China-produced CRH380A train reaching a maximum speed of 416.6 kilometres per hour (258.86 miles per hour) on Tuesday.
The train is designed to run at approximately 350 kilometres per hour between Shanghai and Hangzhou, Xinhua news agency reported.
Some 80 million passengers are expected to travel the route every year. A one-way journey previously took two hours. But the new train shortens that to less than 40 minutes.
Zhang Shuguang, Deputy Chief Engineer from China's Railway Ministry said China was on track to be a global train producer. This breakthrough means that we have become the best in the world in terms of project design, project construction, system equipment, as well as project management and control, he said.
Because of railways' importance to economic development, China aims to expand its high-speed rail network.
China is on track to build a network of over 110-thousand kilometres of track by 2012, the Ministry of Railways told Xinhua.
