China: Man goes berserk, stabs 18 children

Beijing: Barely hours after a Chinese doctor was executed for massacring eight primary school students, a knife wielding man broke into another school in southern China stabbing 18 students and a teacher.

The man, in his 40s, barged into Leicheng First Primary School in Leizhou City in Guangdong Province at around 3 pm and hacked the students before he was overpowered and seized by the police.

All the injured were rushed to local hospitals, official Xinhua news agency reported, without saying how seriously the children had been hurt.

The frenzied attack created a scare in the town with worried parents rushing to the school to take their wards home.

There was no immediate word on the motive for the attack carried out by the man who was not identified.

China has been witnessing a series of attacks on school children prompting a country wide outcry to strengthen security around educational institutions.

Wednesday's attack was similar to an incident last month where a jilted Chinese doctor stabbed to death eight children at a primary school.

He was executed executed in the eastern Fujian province, Xinhua said.

Zheng Minsheng, 42, was shot by the firing squad in Nanping city after his death sentence was approved by the Supreme People's Court (SPC).

The court lost no time in rejecting his petition for leniency and confirmed the sentence against Zheng, whose gruesome act had shocked the country.

Zheng, a former community doctor, stabbed eight children to death with a machete and seriously injured five others on March 23 at the gate of the Nanping Experimental Elementary School.

An investigation found Zheng was acting in frustration following failure in his romantic life, said the statement.
