Islamabad:
UN health workers fear an outbreak of cholera among millions of Pakistanis made homeless by monsoon floods which have swamped the country.
UN spokesman Maurizio Giuliano says one case of cholera is confirmed in Mingora in the northwest Swat Valley. Other cases are suspected among people with acute diarrhea.
The government said Saturday that new flood surges in the south have pushed up the number of people left homeless to 20 million, a figure not yet confirmed by the UN.
The floods have killed more than 1,500 people.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is due to inspect the flood damage on Sunday.
Meanwhile, more American helicopters have joined food aid work. The US has assigned the aircraft from the USS Peleliu in the Arabian Sea.
