Port of Spain:
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has done some tough talking on climate change at the Commonwealth summit in Port of Spain at Trindidad.
He has made it clear that India is willing to sign on to an ambitious global target for emission reduction or limiting temperature increase if it is accompanied by an equitable burden-sharing paradigm.
In a strongly-worded intervention at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM), Singh said, "it is unfortunate that the global discourse on climate change has become enmeshed with arguments about maintaining economic competitiveness or level-playing fields."
Singh disapproved of attempts by some developed countries to lower expectations from the December Summit on Climate Change, saying the negotiations should not be pre-empted and effort should be made to achieve as much convergence as possible.
That tough talk came as French President Nicolas Sarkozy put pressure on the PM to accept legally binding emission cuts.
Speaking to reporters after a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the Commonwealth summit, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he had spoken with the Prime Minister in hopes of persuading him to go to Copenhagen and to agree to substantial cuts by India.
