London:

In a new embarrassment for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a new report claims Britain, Scotland and Libya connived to free the Lockerbie bomber responsible for the death of 270 people.

Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was released on compassionate grounds after medical advice paid for by Libya claimed he only had three months to live. This was crucial to Megrahi's release because under Scottish rules, prisoners can be freed only if they are considered to have this amount of time, or less, to live.

But did Libya pay for the Lockerbie bomber's release? A shocking disclosure by British newspaper The Sunday Telegraph that says al-Megrahi's medical condition was doctored in connivance with British and Scottish governments.

The Scottish government released terminally ill al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds, saying he had just three months to live. But according to the Telegraph, two of the three doctors, who gave this medical evidence, were paid by the Libyan government.

But back in June, doctors said Megrahi could survive another 10 months.

Quoting sources, the paper also says Libya had threatened to cancel trade deals with the UK worth billions of pounds if Megrahi died in a Scottish jail.

The revelations come after Justice Secretary Jack Straw admitted that trade and oil agreements were an essential part of the British government's decision to include Megrahi in a prisoner transfer pact with Libya.
