Copenhagen security up as world leaders arrive

Copenhagen: As world leaders arrive for the final leg of climate change talks in Copenhagen, the city has been turned into a fortress, following attempts by activists to storm the venue - the Bella Centre.

Seven thousand extra policemen have been called in from across Denmark for the summit. Supporting the police will be special army units. Special holding cells have also been created at an abandoned warehouse to hold protesters.

The Danish Parliament has passed laws that allow police to detain people for anything from 12 hours to 40 days.

Also, the Bella cente is now off limits for civic society and thousands of registered NGos. More than 45,000 people were registered for entry into the centre, despite its capacit of just 15,000. Over the past few days, the UN has been curtailing numbers under space and security concerns.

While Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has already arrived, US President Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan singh are due by Friday. And though the talks are back on track, the big question is - will there be a draft ready in time, or will the summit go into extra time?
