Czech 'Forrest Gump' runs 30 marathons in 30 days to inspire the disabled

Prague: A Czech runner who doctors said might never walk again after a car crash announced on Tuesday that he had finished a 30-day run around Iceland aimed at inspiring the disabled.

"I completed the tour of Iceland on Monday evening," 38-year-old Rene Kujan told AFP after having run 1,340 kilometres (838 miles), equivalent to 30 marathons.

The quest has earned him the moniker of the "Czech Forrest Gump", after the film character who spent years running across America in the 1994 US film.

Mr Kujan started his own mission five years ago, when he was told he may not walk again after being seriously injured in a car crash.

"The idea of helping the disabled was born at a Czech rehabilitation centre," said Mr Kujan, who has also started fundraising to help paraplegics.

"During my treatment, I got to know lots of people, brave and strong, many of whom had a much tougher fate than running a marathon a day," Mr Kujan said, adding he had run an average five hours and 30 minutes per day.

During the last stage to the capital of Reykjavik, he was accompanied by about fifty runners.

"I would have run 100 marathons if I knew it would help at least one paraplegic rise from the wheelchair," Mr Kujan told AFP.
