Don't accept Australian assurance: Indian student

Melbourne:

Even as Australia assured that it will protect all Indians pursuing studies in the country, a student leader from the community said he had been "racially abused" thrice in the past month and the government's promises should not accepted until "some results" are seen.

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, on a five-day visit to Australia, had said he had received assurances at the highest levels in the government that every Indian student in the country would be protected.

But Mayank Sharma, a member of the University of Technology Sydney student council and part of a New South Wales government task force on foreign students, said Krishna has no reason to be reassured, ABC News reported on Friday.

"I completely disagree with this because statements are statements always until you get some results and some facts, actually, just something is going on," he said.

Sharma says he has been physically assaulted twice in the 18 months he has been studying for his MBA in Australia and faced a number of personal racist attacks in the past month.
