Copenhagen:
As the world looks forward to the much talked about draft on fighting climate change, India has said that while it is working towards building a consensus, the developed world has not taken enough initiative.
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said, "We will resist in a united manner any manipulation to weaken in any way the troika of the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), the Kyoto protocol and the Bali action plan. The basic group is united and we would like to reiterate that we want an equitable and a fair agreement to emerge out of Copenhagen but if, for some reason, there are disappointments, we are not to be blamed."
As the schism between the developed and developing countries widened at the Copenhagen Summit, the BASIC group consisting of Brazil, South Africa, India and China on Tuesday issued a joint statement accusing the rich countries of trying to derail the talks.
In the statement, the BASIC bloc called on the developed countries to commit to legally-binding quantifiable targets and not to ignore or sideline the Kyoto Protocol, which they said should remain the basis of talks.
