Drunk Russian teen drives into Easter procession, kills two

Moscow: A drunk Russian teenager drove a stolen car into an Easter procession of Orthodox worshippers in Siberia today, killing two police officers on duty, police said.

After drinking and brawling with a group of youths, the 19-year-old youth stole a car and crashed it into several other vehicles in the city of Novosibirsk.

He then drove onto the pavement and hit two police officers who were on duty as Orthodox believers held a traditional procession to celebrate Easter Sunday.

"Witnesses said the car was practically out of control and flew straight at the column of people. And the man at the wheel was extremely drunk," Novosibirsk's police service said in a statement.

A policewoman died at the scene, while a policeman died from his injuries in hospital.

The driver was detained at the scene and tests found alcohol in his blood.

He is being investigated for dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol and causing deaths. If convicted, he could face up to nine years in prison.
