Quake in Indonesia: Panic in Chennai, Kolkata
Though there was no damage reported, the tsunami warning brought back unpleasant memories in Chennai. In Kolkata, cracks appeared in some houses and metro services were suspended for over 45 minutes.

Two massive earthquakes triggered back-to-back tsunami warnings for Indonesia on Wednesday, sending panicked residents fleeing to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles. Update: A few thousand people were evacuated to higher ground from parts of Andaman and Nicobar islands on Wednesday following earthquakes in Indonesia, as the islands prepared for tsunami waves up to 3.9 metres high, officials said.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has called an emergency meet after a tsunami alert was sounded in six coastal districts of the state.

In India, tremors were reported in Mumbai, Kolkata,  Bangalore, Chennai and all along the east coast.  The tremors lasted for a few seconds. No damage has been reported so far.

Indonesia has issued a fresh tsunami warning after an aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 shook its western coast.

The epicenter of the second quake- measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 16.40 km, was initially determined to be 615 km southwest of Banda Aceh in northernmost Sumatra, Xinhua reported citing the US Geological Survey.

Thailand's Phuket international airport closed after tsunami warning
The international airport on the southern Thai tourist island of Phuket was closed on Wednesday after a tsunami warning was issued following an 8.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, its director said.

Fresh 8.2 magnitude aftershock hits Indonesia - USGS

Indonesia's geophysics agency has reported aftershocks in Aceh, 8.2 on the Richter scale.

Fresh tremors reported from Kolkata too. People in high rises say the second one made them vacate office. "We don't want to take a risk after the second one," said a young woman who grabbed her bag and was out of her building in a trice.   

Chennai beaches have been evacuated; new tremors were felt a few minutes ago.  

Fresh tremors, milder ones, have been reported in Chennai, Delhi and other parts of the country at about 4.25 pm.

At Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, the nuclear plant is functioning normally. The emergency centre was activated after the quake and tsunami, but the reactor is producing electricity normally.

Six National Disaster Relief Force teams of 40 people each are on the ready with equipment at Hindon, near Delhi, and in Chennai for a quick airlift to the Andamans if necessary. 

 

The new heavy lift aircraft, the C-130 J of the Indian Air Force is ready to fly too.

Tsunami virtually ruled out, but all precautions being taken, says Govt
Officials in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands prepped for evacuation procedures though by 5.30 pm, an all-clear is likely to be formally announced. 
Union Home Secretary RK Singh has said that as of now there are no signs of  a tsunami. The Centre, Mr Singh said, is in constant touch with Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has said there is no threat to Mumbai or the rest of the state. But, he said, till there was a tsunami alert in place people must be careful. In Mumbai tremors were felt 155 km offshore.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has reported a 45 cm tsunami wave seen hitting Campbell Bay in the Nicobar Islands. That is not a big tsunami wave. The warning for the Nicobar Islands was that waves of three to six metres could hit the islands soon after the quake. The tsunami warning is still in place. Experts say an all-clear will only come if there is no tsunami till about 5 to 5.30 pm today. 

Anchored ships in the Andamans have been told to move to high seas. 

A tsunami alert has been sounded for 28 countries, including the east coast of India.

A tsunami watch was issued for Nicobar Islands, suggesting that a tsunami could strike that Indian group of islands immediately after the Indonesia quake; over an hour later, the good news is that there has been no tsunami yet. But the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are on full alert.

The Aceh earthquake 's magnitude has been revised to 8.6 on the Richter Scale. 

In Chennai, where tremors were felt in several places, there are still people out on the popular Marina beach.

The Kolkata Metro suspended operations at 2.42 pm as a precautionary measure. Metro services resumed at 3.30 pm.
