Eliminate fundamentalists: Zardari to Pak

Islamabad:

With the US declaring its border with Afghanistan the most dangerous place in the world, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday appealed to the people to help the government in preventing fundamentalists from taking over the country.

Zardari said with the people's support no fundamentalist will ever be able to take over the country, as Pakistanis remembered their first elected Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on his 30th death anniversary, a report said.

"I promise you that with your support nothing of this sort will ever happen. No one can break Pakistan," he said.

Bhutto's son-in-law Zardari, who presided over the main ceremony in Garhi Khuda Baksh, also pledged to make Pakistan a "strong, prosperous and forward looking nation".

Zardari reminded that the US has put Pakistan at the heart of the fight against Al-Qaida, declaring its border with Afghanistan the most dangerous place in the world for Americans.

Hundreds of PPP activists assembled at Garhi Khuda Bukhsh in Sindh province, where Bhutto is buried. The former Prime Minister was hanged after a military coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq overthrew his elected government in 1979.

The anniversary was observed amid heavy security with 6000 security personnel deployed in and around the mausoleum to prevent any untoward incident.
