Reports identified the shooter as Tetsuya Yamagami, a local man.
Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, is believed to be a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
He was believed to be standing behind Shinzo Abe, 10 feet away, when he fired at him.
Shinzo Abe collapsed on stage in the middle of his speech. Yamagami was tackled to the ground by security.
The man did not try to run away, as per Japan's public broadcaster NHK.
He is currently being questioned at Nara Nishi police station.
He told police that he "targeted Abe with the intention of killing him", claim reports.
He was said to be "dissatisfied" with Shinzo Abe.
Reports say he used a shotgun. He has been charged with attempted murder.
The suspected shooter is believed to have made the gun himself.
