Gunfire and explosions were heard today in Burundi's capital Bujumbura shortly before polls opened in controversial elections with the president seeking re-election for a third consecutive term, witnesses said.
At least two people were killed -- one policeman and a civilian -- in a string of blasts and gunfire overnight on Monday, police sources and witnesses said. Bujumbura has been the epicentre of three months of anti-government protests.
