Fast-moving storm rips through US

Illinois/Michigan/Iowa: A sudden and fast-moving storm lashed northern Illinois during the Monday morning rush hour, downing trees, ripping off roofs and leaving 800-thousand utility customers without power - the most outages in at least a decade.

Several people were injured, including seven workers struck by a collapsing festival tent and a woman shocked by a high-voltage charge that came through her landline telephone.

In rural areas, winds measured at 60 to 75 miles per hour (95 to 120 kilometers per hour) flattened cornfields and at least one barn.

Emergency crews in Chicago were called to rescue people trapped in their cars by fallen trees.

"The storm was so bad that I couldn't see... As soon as I parked, the tree come tumbling down on me," said Mattie Liggins, a storm victim.

Airlines reported delays at both O'Hare and Midway airports and more than 200 flight cancellations at O'Hare.

Train delays caused havoc with Chicago's morning commute.

Severe thunderstorms also struck southern Wisconsin on Monday.

The storms brought winds in excess of 60 miles per hour (95 kilometers per hour), knocking down trees and utility poles and damaging homes and businesses.

There were no reports of serious injuries.

In Muskego County, Michigan, high winds blew a tree onto an antique Model T Ford vehicle early on Monday.

The tree crushed the rare car, which owner Rick Anderson had converted to a street rod.

Anderson said the car was damaged beyond repair when his neighbour's tree was uprooted and fell onto it.

He said he parked the car outdoors on Sunday night - rather than putting it in his garage - because he was in a hurry.

Anderson had purchased the car in California and, after some restoration work, had just got it ready to drive.

Thousands of people were without power some could be without electricity for up to two days after violent storms toppled trees and power lines across parts of central and eastern Iowa.

High winds led to several vehicle accidents on an interstate highway near Urbana, Iowa.

The winds blew over several trucks, including some tractor-trailers.

There were no serious injuries.
