Lisbon:
Portuguese firefighters were fighting a major wildfire close to the northern border with Spain on Sunday, as fires continued to burn across the country.
139 firefighters were working to put out the wildfire in the region of Arcos de Valdevez, in northern Portugal, which broke out on Tuesday.
"Last night was terrible with the flames near the houses. The fire almost reached my house and I couldn't do anything," said a female villager from the region's Cunhas village.
The Portuguese broadcaster RTP also reported that according the National Authority for Civil protection, 226 firefighters backed by 50 vehicles and four aircraft were battling the fires on Sunday morning.
Since late July, strong winds and a heatwave have caused large wildfires, mostly in forested areas of Portugal's north and central regions, RTP reported.
Wildfires are common in Portugal during summer and almost 10-thousand fighters and 56 aircraft are on standby this year.
Two firefighters died earlier this month while trying to tackle the blazes.
