Chicago:
Ameya Pawar has become the first Indian-American to join the Chicago City Council by getting elected as the next alderman of Chicago's 47th ward.
Pawar, 30, had earlier entered the race last year against 35-year incumbent Eugene Schulter for the city's North Side ward. Schulter later dropped out of the race and that gave Pawar the edge.
Pawar, who works as a programme assistant for Northwestern University's Office of Emergency Management Services, said that as a member of the Chicago City Council, he would work on the tax system, give residents a voice, and improve the ward.
Pawar got 50.8 per cent of the vote against his nearest rival Tom O' Donnell's 43.5 per cent to avoid a run-off in the February 22 election, according to the Chicago Tribune.
According to media reports, Pawar has said that he will accept only USD 60,000 of an alderman's USD 110,000 salary and will only seek two terms in office.
Born and raised in Chicagoland area, he has an MS from the University of Chicago's Threat and Response Management Programme, and a master's in Public Administration from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
