Quito: Five Ecuadoran youths died Friday after drinking bootleg liquor while apparently celebrating their country's World Cup win over Honduras, authorities said Saturday.
Two others remain hospitalized following festivities after Friday's match at a motel in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, according to an Interior Ministry statement.
"The youths ranged in age between 20 and 21," it said. "Apparently, they were celebrating the outcome of Ecuador's game."
The Honduran team had looked on course for its first ever World Cup win Friday but ended up losing 2-1 to Ecuador, moving the South American team into second place in Group E of the competition.
In 2013, an Ecuadoran court sentenced a man to a year in prison and another to five months behind bars for the bootleg-related deaths of 50 people.
