Five die in New York apartment blaze, baby critical

New York: Five people died and a baby was critically injured in a fire that engulfed a New York apartment building on Saturday. A partial roof collapse hindered 138 firefighters in a two-hour battle to pull out the living and douse the flames.

The blaze erupted during the night, quickly taking over the Brooklyn building, which consisted of a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments on the two floors above.

Firefighters arrived within three minutes of the emergency call. But Fire Department spokesman Frank Dwyer said, "They found heavy smoke and heavy flames. This fire escalated quickly."

Five residents of the building were confirmed dead, a baby was in critical condition, and three other people were hospitalised, Dwyer said. Thirteen firefighters suffered minor injuries, nine of them requiring hospital treatment.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
