Five things about Rio+20

Five things about Rio+20
Rio de janeiro, Brazil: Coming as it does 20 years after the Earth Summit held in the same city in 1992, the United Nations conference on sustainable development is commonly referred to as Rio+20.

  1. Where? Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  2. When? June 20-22, 2012
  3. Why? To get countries to re-commit their political backing to sustainable development with the focus on going green.
  4. 130 countries will be participating and as many as 50000 delegates/media contingent will be in Rio.
  5. US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are not attending but sending their representatives. The US team will be led by Secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
There has been a lot of debate on the draft prepared which was finalised late on Monday night in Rio, but many feel the final draft is a very watered down version of what the summit started out to do.
