Istanbul: Flash floods in northwestern Turkey forced the evacuation of about 200 workers at tile and brick factories by helicopter on Saturday, an official said.
Flood waters were receding and rescue workers were working to evacuate a small number of workers left at the factories near the town of Kumbag, Gov. Zubeyir Kemelek of Tekirdag province said. He denied earlier media reports that five workers went missing.
Private ATV television said the Turkish military also used tanks in the rescue effort. The heaviest rains in eight decades fueled flash floods that have killed at least 31 people in Turkey since Monday. Nine other people are still missing from floods earlier this week.
Torrential rains also triggered floods elsewhere in the region Saturday and Istanbul's Sariyer and Kilyos suburbs, causing at least one bridge to collapse near the town of Kesan on the Greek border and inundating dozens of homes in Istanbul.
Floods were also reported in the western cities of Canakkale, Balikesir, Aydin, Izmir, Antalya and Bursa.
