Paris, France:
France has appointed a special envoy for Libya as part of its efforts to address growing violence in the country and to deter Libya-based terrorism from spreading in Africa.
French President Francois Hollande has singled out Libya as a primary supplier of weapons to the Jihadist terror group Boko Haram.
Thursday's appointment of Denis Gauer follows a French summit focused on finding and freeing 276 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Gauer's goals would be "stabilization of Libya and an acceleration of reconciliation and inter-Libyan dialogue."
Gauer was previously ambassador to Iraq. The 59-year-old diplomat has broad experience in crisis situations and mediation. As Libya envoy he is expected to cooperate with United Nations, European Union and Arab League counterparts.
