Beijing:
Speaking at a university in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reached out to distressed farmers and addressed the allegations of opposition parties back home.
"We will make sure land acquisition does not become a barrier to growth or burden to farmers," he said at the Tsinghua University in Beijing.
PM Modi and his government have faced unrelenting protests by opposition parties in Parliament against a proposal to make it easier to buy farm land for infrastructure projects. Rahul Gandhi and his Congress party have called the new rules anti-farmer and vowed to block the land bill.
The government yesterday indicated that an ordinance or executive order on the new land acquisition rules would be promulgated for the third time after the bill failed to make it through Parliament in the Budget session.
"We are changing the way we govern ourselves not just in Delhi but the way we work with state governments," PM Modi said, adding, "You will see the change in India."
