German Finance Chief Opposes 'A La Carte' Brexit Menu

London: German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble on Friday insisted in a newspaper interview that Britain cannot serve up its own tailored menu on negotiating its exit from the European Union.

His comments to the Financial Times echo those of European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker, who has said Britain could not expect "a la carte" access to the EU's single market if it brings back immigration controls.

Schauble told the business daily: "There is no a la carte menu. There is only the whole menu or none."

He said: "Until the UK's exit is complete, Britain will certainly have to fulfill its commitments. Possibly there will be some commitments that last beyond the exit... even, in part, to 2030."

Schauble also said that the EU "cannot grant any generous rebates" to the UK.

Prime Minister Theresa May's government has said Britain would start Brexit negotiations by the end of March and prioritise cutting immigration from the EU, a move that goes against a key principle of the European single market.

Britain voted June 23 in favour of quitting the EU, while May's Conservative administration has appealed a ruling in the High Court that parliament should give approval for the triggering of  Article 50 -- the formal process for leaving the European Union.
