New Delhi:
The detention hearing of Ghulam Nabi Fai, arrested by the FBI for illegally lobbying for Pakistan and its spy agency to influence US policy on Kashmir, is set to happen later today.
Reportedly, Mr Fai made donations to Congressmen and presidential candidates, and organised conferences and seminars to reflect the viewpoint of Pakistan on Kashmir.
The Ministry of External Affairs has chosen not to react on his arrest.
But it has angered some in Kashmir. Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for protest, post Friday prayers.
"Mr. Fai has been active for last 32 years highlighting the plight of his people," Geelani said. "Because of his unflinching advocacy of the Kashmir cause at the international level, he had become an eyesore for India."
"It is regrettable that we are hearing statements being made that we are going to look into the participants who have participated in these events and separatists are going to feel the heat. I must say we have been feeling the heat for last 20 years in Kashmir. There is nothing new in it. As far as Hurriyat is concerned, we will continue play a role which we believe is necessary for the resolution of Kashmir conflict," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chairman, Hurriyat Conference.
