Google celebrated 100th birthday of Claude Shannon with a doodle.
New Delhi: Today Google celebrated the 100th birthday of Claude Shannon, also known as the 'father of information theory'.

Doodle is a cartoon Shannon juggling, a reference to the juggling machines he built and his juggling on a unicycle in lab halls.

Shannon is famous for having founded information theory with a landmark paper that he published in 1948. He is perhaps equally well known for founding both digital computer and digital circuit design theory in 1937.

His most famous work is A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1949) in which he introduced information theory, the branch of mathematics focused on transmitting digital data.

It was in this masterpiece that he coined the term "bit",  the fundamental unit of information which relates to digital certainty: true or false, on or off, yes or no.

Chess and juggling were favorite activities of Shannon so he turned his genius to creating machine versions of them.

Shannon battled Alzheimer's disease late in life and passed away in 2001.
