Thessaloniki: Police are searching a garbage dump in northern Greece for the body of a newborn baby after a woman told authorities she had given birth at home and then hid the infant in a closet for two days before dumping it in a garbage can.
Police said on Friday they were alerted by doctors at a hospital in the city of Thessaloniki when the 37-year-old was admitted on Thursday night for complications following childbirth.
They said the woman told them she gave birth in her bathroom last Saturday, wrapped the newborn in two plastic bags and hid it in her bedroom closet. Two days later, she allegedly threw the child's body in a trash can outside her home.
The woman faces charges of child homicide and insulting the dead.
