Jakarta:
Indonesia has found an answer to its growing child obesity problem. Gyms!
According to the government, 14 percent of Indonesian children under five are either obese or overweight.
That means less playtime and more working out. The classes are divided into three main age groups ranging from six-months to 12-year-olds.
Children's Gym owner Dini Sembiring says that parents now understand the need for their children to develop both their minds and bodies.
"We think we must develop not only a child's brain, but also his or her physical strength, muscle strength, coordination and balance. They are all important for a child's development."
In the class is 10-year-old Angeline.
She says she enjoyed the trial session and now wants to sign up for more classes.
"I am also wishing to sign up here, because it is kind of fun and it makes my body more flexible."
Meanwhile, parents like Mia are happy to have found a place which offers a healthy alternative for fun to their kids.
She says: "In here my son gets a structured playtime with the aim of building certain body muscles. This is different from other playgrounds where everything is let loose. In here they have instructors and they watch over the activities of the children. The children gain two things here, they get to play in this gym because they like the place and it is fun, but they also benefit from it by building their muscles."
In less than a year this gym has 200 members despite it costing 150 dollars for 8 sessions.
