Haiti: 50,000 dead, 3 million need urgent relief
Geneva: The Haitian earthquake has killed an estimated 45,000-50,000 people and around three million, that is a third of their population, need emergency relief, a spokesman for the Red Cross federation said on Thursday. (In Pics: Massive earthquake rocks Haiti)

"We consider this as an estimate" from the Haitian Red Cross, said Jean-Luc Martinage, a spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

He said it was based both on figures being used by Haitian government members and on information from the Haitian Red Cross' wide network of volunteers in Port-au-Prince.

Three days after the devastating quake struck Haiti, relief work is entering a critical period. Unless massive humanitarian aid arrives by Friday, and it's well coordinated, over three million people will suffer.

The capital's General Hospital has become a massive makeshift ward and there's a shortage of beds and even doctors. Though countries are sending aid teams, but there is a huge gap between the requirement and availability.
