Mexico City: Hurricane Carlos was downgraded to a tropical storm today off Mexico's Pacific coast, forecasters said.

It had reached Category 1 hurricane status on Saturday, but was so far offshore it caused just minor damage from winds buffeting seaside restaurants in Acapulco.

At 1800 GMT, it was about 110 kilometers (70 miles) southwest of Acapulco, the US National Weather Service said. Its top winds had dropped to 110 kilometers per hour.

Heavy rain was forecast for coastal areas of the states of Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacan and Oaxaca, as well as some inland states.

Carlos was the third hurricane of the Pacific storm season, following Andres, which never made landfall, and Blanca, which weakened to a tropical storm when it reached Baja California peninsula earlier this month.
