Melbourne: An Indian-origin man in Australia allegedly stabbed his wife to death at their home in Melbourne early on Friday because he believed she was having an affair, a court has heard.
The Melbourne Magistrates' Court heard Parminder Singh, 29, killed Nikita Chawla, 23, after checking her mobile phone, which he believed confirmed his suspicions about her infidelity, the Herald Sun reported.
Parminder Singh allegedly called triple zero around 1.30 a.m and admitted to repeatedly stabbing his wife with a knife.
The Brunswick West man was arrested in the vicinity of his Waxman Pde home. He was charged with one count of murder on Friday.
Parminder Singh appeared in court for a brief filing hearing. Magistrate John Doherty noted it was his first time in custody and arranged for a mental health assessment.
His lawyer told the court that Parminder Singh had previously seen a psychiatrist for anxiety issues.
CCTV footage, DNA and forensic evidence will be analysed for evidence.
Parminder Singh has been remanded in custody until May 1.
The woman had sustained upper body injuries, homicide detective sergeant Mark Hatt said.
The victim's family is yet to be notified of her death.
