Indian community leaders in Australia have urged students to put an end to the string of violent protests in Harris Park in Melbourne during an emergency meeting on Wednesday night.
For a third night in a row, Indian students took to the streets to protest against racially motivated attacks by alleged groups of Middle Eastern men. But post the meeting the protest was disbanded.
The meeting was attended by community leaders, the Consulate General of India, police officials and students. They all agreed that there was no need for continued rallies.
Meanwhile, after several race attacks on Indians in Australia, Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja has postponed her trip to the country next month.
The Tourism Ministry had planned a series of promotional programmes in Australian cities in July to showcase India as an attractive adventure tourism destination.
The Minister told reporters that the current atmosphere is not conducive to such a promotional event and the ministry will work out a new schedule after the situation improves.
