A 67-year-old pensioner, Ekram ul Haq, of Indian origin was battered to death in South West London by a gang of teenagers. The police have arrested four teenagers between the age of 12 and 15 describing it as a racially motivated attack.
The 67-year-old was born in Kolkata and moved to the UK in the 70s often visited a mosque in South West London with his three-year-old grand daughter.
Last Monday, he was returning from his evening prayers during ramzan as usual when he was the victim of an unprovoked brutal attack.
Exactly a week ago at about 10 at night, Ekram ul Haq was waiting in the area of Tooting with his grand daughter when a large group of teenagers attacked him from behind clubbing his head. He fell down with a serious head injury and was found in a critical condition.
It was CCTV footage and the eyewitness account of Haq's 3-year-old grand daughter that led the police to the gang that attacked the pensioner.
The area is dominated by Indians, Pakistanis and Sri Lankan Tamils but most are now not willing to talk to the media for fear of being targeted by this gang of teenagers.
The 67-year-old devout Muslim who worked as a caregiver to the disabled had retired recently.
His family finally pulled him off the ventilator a week after he was attacked with his son describing the attack as mindless violence. The teenagers charged with the attack will now appear in court.
