Indian student charged with raping teenage girl in Australia

Melbourne:

A married Indian student has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in the Australian city of Brisbane, police said on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old student, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested and charged with rape, deprivation of liberty and indecent treatment of a child under 16, the media here reported quoting police.

Police said he sexually assaulted the 14-year-old at Burnett Lane, Brisbane city, around 3 am local time on Sunday. The victim's identity, including her nationality, was not revealed.

The student was granted bail today by the Brisbane Magistrates Court, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported, adding that he sat quietly in the dock during the hearing.

The accused's lawyer Adam McGill argued that his client was not a flight risk and was willing to surrender his passport.

The student is married, lives in Brisbane and has no criminal history in India or Australia, the report said.

Magistrate Alan Taylor ordered him to report twice a week to police. He was asked to reappear before the court on August 24.
