Melbourne:
A 29-year old Indian student has been sentenced to at least two years and three months in prison for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl in Melbourne.
Mujahed ur-Rahman, a student who also worked as a Foxtel salesman had approached the resident of south-east Melbourne on September 30 last year, asking her to buy the pay television service.
After she declined, Mujahed went outside to the front yard and picked up the woman's nine-year-old daughter and kissed her on the cheek before he sexually penetrated the girl in front of her younger brother, according to an AAP report.
Judge Paul Lacava said Mojahed's conduct was the sort of thing every parent feared.
"Your offending involved touching a young girl, that is totally unacceptable," he told the Victorian County Court on Monday.
"Young children ought to feel safe in the confines of their own homes in broad daylight," he said.
Rahman had arrived in Australia in October 2008 to study for a diploma in hospitality management.
He had no social life and spent most of his time studying and working for Foxtel, the court was told.
"You seem to me to be a relatively simple man alone in a strange country with few if any friends," Judge Lacava said adding: "It seems to me that your simplicity and loneliness are contributing factors".
Lacava said Rahman had a good chance of rehabilitation, but general deterrence, denunciation and protecting the community were important factors for consideration while sentencing.
Rahman pleaded guilty to one count of sexually penetrating a child aged under 16.
He also pleaded guilty to an additional two charges relating to separate incidences on another victim, committing an indecent act on a child aged under 16 and knowingly possessing child pornography.
Lacava sentenced Rahman to three years and nine months' jail, with a non-parole period of two years and three months.
He said the 243 days Rahman had already spent in jail would be counted as already served.
