Dubai: A 40-year-old Indian woman in Oman, jailed for killing her alcoholic husband, was released today on compassionate grounds ahead of her deportation. The appeals court in Sur city last week had reduced her jail term from five years to six months taking the mercy petition filed by her children and other family members into consideration.
"Initially, the court sentenced the accused to a five-year jail term, but later, taking the woman's current predicament and a mercy petition filed by her children and other family members into consideration, the court commuted the jail term to six months," Khalid Al Najashi, the advocate of the woman, was quoted as saying by the Times of Oman. She was released from jail today and will be deported within days.
"I am not able to express my gratitude in words for the Omani judiciary, social workers and my friends who helped in me my troubled time. I thank everyone who helped me a lot in my
release," the woman said.
The woman hailing from Kerala worked as a teacher in a school in Sur in northeastern Oman. She was arrested after her 49-year-old husband's unnatural death on October 25 last year.
She had stabbed her husband, who was in a drunken state, following a brawl.
Her two daughters, who were sent to India after the incident, are with their grandmother in Pune.
