For the second consecutive year, the Indonesian capital city has decided to grant a one day Diwali holiday tomorrow to all Indian nationals and Indonesians of Indian descent so they can celebrate the Hindu festival of lights.
In a statement, the Jakarta city administration announced a one day-off for those observing the festival after meeting a representative of the Indian community, A S Kobalen.
"The Jakarta Manpower and Transmigration Agency calls for businesses who employ Indian nationals and Indonesians of Indian descent to allow them to celebrate Diwali on October 22 by granting them a day-off in accordance with their work rights," the statement signed by agency head Priyono said.
The Jakarta city administration has also given a day-off on the Diwali festival last year.
There are more than 100,000 Indonesians of Indian origin mostly concentrated in Greater Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Bandung, and nearly 10,000 Indian nationals living in Indonesia, according to the website of Indian Embassy in Indonesia.
