Israel-Hamas War Live Updates:

Following days of expanding ground operations, the Israeli army late on Thursday said that it had encircled Gaza City as the Israel-Hamas war raged for the twenty-eighth day on Friday. Israel has been relentlessly bombarding Gaza since the October 7 attacks by the Hamas group, in which, 1,400 people were killed and more than 230 taken hostage. 

"We're at the height of the battle. We've had impressive successes and have passed the outskirts of Gaza City. We are advancing," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

According to the Gaza health ministry, over 9,000 people have been killed, including 3,760 children, in Israeli airstrikes.

Israeli Military Says Hit An Ambulance Being Used By Hamas

The Israeli military said on Friday that one of its aircraft hit an ambulance which soldiers assessed was being used by a Hamas unit close to their position in the battle zone.

It said a number of Hamas fighters were killed in the strike and said it had information that Hamas used ambulances to transport fighters and weapons.

'No Place That Is Safe' In Gaza As Schools, Shelters Hit: UN
UN buildings in Gaza are no longer safe as shelters due to fighting by Israel and Hamas, a UN official warned Friday, with more than 50 buildings "impacted" by the conflict, including five "direct hits."

Israel Expels Workers Back To Battered Gaza
They arrived at the border crossing with the Gaza Strip in a constant stream, many of them exhausted and still bearing the scars of time spent in an Israeli jail.

Some had raw wrists from being handcuffed and still had prison numbers tied round their ankles.

On Friday, Israel began to forcibly repatriate to the besieged and battered Palestinian territory thousands of Gazans who had been working in Israel.

They were some of the 18,500 Gaza Palestinians who had visas to work in Israel, but whose right to do so was rescinded three days after the Hamas attacks of October 7.

A journalist working for the Palestinian Authority's television channel was killed on Thursday in an Israeli strike on Gaza, his network reported, as war rages between Israel and Hamas.

Strike On AFP's Gaza Bureau Causes Significant Damage
Agence France-Presse's bureau in the Gaza Strip, which has been relentlessly bombed by Israel, was significantly damaged by a strike on the building, according to an AFP staff member who visited Friday.

The unmanned AFP camera broadcasting live 24/7 captured the moment of the strike, a few minutes before midday (1000 GMT) on Thursday.

'Some Progress' In talks on letting fuel into Gaza, Says UN Aid Chief
The United Nations aid chief said on Friday that there had been "some progress" in ongoing negotiations to allow fuel into the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip for the first time since hostilities began on Oct. 7.

"I heard just this morning as I came in, there has been some progress on allowing some more fuel in through these negotiations," Martin Griffiths told a briefing for member states at the United Nations in New York, referring to ongoing negotiations between the global body, Israel, Egypt and the United States. "I hope to see that confirmed during today."

In the same speech he also repeated his call for "humanitarian pauses" in Israel's bombardment of the enclave to help aid deliveries, which are far below pre-conflict levels.

Thousands Rally In Jordan Capital For Gaza Ceasefire
Some 5,000 Jordanians protested Friday in the capital Amman, calling on King Abdullah II to press for a ceasefire in fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, AFP correspondents said.

Hamas Still Holds 241 Israeli Hostages, Says Israel Army
Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari on Friday revised the number of hostages being held by the Hamas terror group after the October 7 barbaric attack, The Times of Israel reported.

Hagari said that Hamas still holds 241 Israeli hostages in Gaza and revised the number from 242. He added that the number is not final as military investigations are going on in the region.

The Times of Israel reported that the number does not include four released hostages and an Israeli soldier who was rescued by the IDF.

New US Ambassador To Israel Arrives To Take Up Post
The newly appointed US ambassador to Israel arrived in the country on Friday to assume his position, which had been vacant for months, as war rages between Israel and Hamas.

Jack Lew, who was sworn in on Thursday, was on board the plane that brought US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israel, an AFP journalist said.

The United Nations humanitarian office said on Friday the cost of meeting the needs of people in Gaza and the West Bank was estimated at $1.2 billion.

"The cost of meeting the needs of 2.7 million people - that is the entire population of Gaza and 500,000 people in the occupied West Bank - is estimated to be $1.2 billion," said Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Situation In Gaza Is "Indescribable", Says WHO
The World Health Organization on Friday said that the situation in Gaza is "indescribable". While briefing the media, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that since "Hamas' horrific attacks" on Israel on October 7, more than 10,000 people have been killed, including over 8,500 in Gaza and 1,400 in Israel. 

"In both Israel and Gaza, 70% of those killed are women and children," he said.
"The situation on the ground is indescribable. IsraelI Air Force today said that they have killed another Hamas commander who took a "central part" in the conduct of the fighting against their forces in the Gaza Strip. 

"Air Force fighter jets, guided by accurate intelligence from the Amman and the Shin Bet, killed Moztapa Delol, the commander of the Zabra Tel Elhua Battalion," the IsraelI Air Force said.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) today said that the soldiers from the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion and the Armored Corps' 53rd Battalion clashed with the Hamas operatives inside Gaza overnight.

Germany Bans Hamas Activities
Germany on Thursday banned Hamas activities and organisations linked to the group.

"With Hamas, I have today completely banned the activities of a terrorist organisation that aims to destroy the state of Israel," Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a statement.

The minister also issued a prohibition for the organisation Samidoun, an international network that "spread anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda under the guise of a 'solidarity organisation' for prisoners", she said.

Thailand In Talks With Iran For Hamas Hostages Release
Thailand Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara today said that he is in touch with Iran and other governments that can make contact with Hamas for the safe release of nearly two dozen Thai nationals being held hostage.

Bahiddha-Nukara said Iran, which is close to Hamas, has promised to help with negotiations.

At least 23 Thai nationals are among more than 240 people taken hostage when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

A 20-year-old Indian-origin Israeli soldier was among the Israeli troops killed while fighting in Gaza, community members and the Mayor of the town have said.

Staff-Sgt. Halel Solomon was from the southern Israeli town of Dimona.

102 Aid Trucks Entered Gaza On Thursday: UN
As many as 102 trucks carrying humanitarian supplies entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing on Thursday, the UN said.

"This is the largest convoy since delivery of aid resumed on 21 October, bringing the total number of trucks that entered to 374," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

The entry of fuel, however, remains banned by the Israeli authorities.

Israel will return Gazans working inside the country to the besieged Palestinian territory, the government said.

"Israel is severing all contact with Gaza. There will be no more Palestinian workers from Gaza," the Israeli security cabinet announced in a statement late Thursday.

"Those workers from Gaza who were in Israel on the day of the outbreak of the war will be returned to Gaza," it added, without specifying how many people would be sent back.

More foreign passport holders and dual nationals crossed into Egypt on Thursday after the Rafah crossing was opened to people seeking to flee Gaza.

The health ministry in Cairo said 21 wounded Palestinians and 344 foreign nationals, including 72 children entered Egypt.

Egypt said it would help evacuate "about 7,000" foreigners and dual nationals with passports issued by more than 60 countries.
