Israeli Police up Alert Level After Arab Protests

Jerusalem: Israeli police have raised their alert level following protests across the country over the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Arab who appeared in video footage to be retreating from police.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Sunday's move raises preparedness to its second highest level. It comes a day after thousands took to the streets to protest the shooting, with many hurling rocks and firebombs at police.

The police's internal investigations department is looking into the shooting to determine whether proper protocol was followed.

The tensions add to those raging in Jerusalem, where Palestinians from the eastern part of the city have been clashing almost daily with police over access to a disputed holy site. The new alert level is the country's highest since the summer's 50-day Gaza war.
