Rome:
A man in Italy has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for stealing two crates of tomatoes worth 100 euros ($125), AKI news agency reported.
According to a local the Gazetta del Mezzogiorno newspaper, prosecutors in the southern city of Lecce asked for a prison term of four years for 30-year-old Daniele Carlino.
Carlino took two crates of tomatoes from a local farmer's van in Racale village near Lecce in July 2011 after threatening the farmer and drove off with them but was identified from descriptions by witnesses.
In a failed attempt to avoid prison, Carlino sent 100 euros to the farmer during the investigation that led to his trial and conviction.
