Bucharest, Romania: Italy's president has called on the European Union to adopt a more organized approach to large numbers of migrants who arrive in Europe.
President Sergio Mattarella said his country had asked the EU to "establish an articulated and common approach... together with the countries the migrants leave from."
"It is a problem which the whole of Europe is faced with," he said. The International Organization for Migration says more than 48,000 migrants arrived in Italy this year.
Mattarella met with Romanian President Klaus Lohannis on Tuesday to discuss migrants, the EU and the hundreds of thousands of Romanians who live in Italy.
Italy is the second largest investor in Romania, with new business worth 13 billion euros ($14.6 billion) in 2015.
Romania and Italy share cultural, linguistic and historic ties.
