It's Super Bowl vs Puppy Bowl this Sunday

New York: While America prepares to watch the biggest annual event on TV, the Super Bowl, this Sunday, animal lovers have a treat in store for them, Puppy Bowl.

Now in its seventh year, Puppy Bowl plans to give stiff competition to the football event.

As he has in past years Andrew L. Schechter, a producer for Animal Planet will don his referee cap and uniform for the "game" involving 47 different puppies in a miniature "stadium" created for the event.

"Seven years ago the executives at Animal Planet thought, 'What could be the best counterprogramming for the other big game, you know, the Super Bowl,' and we said, 'what's something that everyone loves? Puppies - and who would not want to watch puppies if you're not a fan of football?'" said Schechter. "At first you just tune it on but when you see the puppies your eyes are hooked and you can't change the channel."

While the puppies are the main event they're not the only animals. There are also hamsters, "piloting" the show's makeshift "blimp," kittens for the half-time show and a couple of gals that are ready to wing it during the game.

"This year we have a lot of new features - one being we have chicks on the sidelines," said Schechter. "That's right; chicken cheerleaders rooting on the puppy players."

Puppy Bowl VII also has an advantage over superbowl. The fans of the players don't have to wait in long queues for an autograph. They can simply bring these sport stars home as all the animals on the show are up for adoption.
