Japan Firefighters Tackle Forest Blaze Near Industrial Site

Tokyo: Firefighters in Japan were on Tuesday battling to contain a forest fire that was threatening a nearby industrial complex housing fuel tanks.

Two helicopters and 30 fire trucks were fighting the blaze. It destroyed about 10 hectares (25 acres) of forest within the first few hours, after taking hold near the western city of Aioi in Hyogo prefecture on the Seto Inland Sea coast.

The fire at one point came within 20 metres (66 feet) of an industrial area where flammable fuels are stored before receding, an official said, adding the blaze was now extending on the opposite side of the mountain.

There were no casualties and the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

Although Japan has many forest-covered mountains, large blazes are uncommon.
