In January this year, 16-year-old Aidan Grainger from Royal Wootton Bassett Academy set the European record for solving the Megaminx, a complex 12-sided puzzle. This accomplishment elevated him to the ninth position globally among Megaminx solvers, as recognized by the World Cube Association (WCA).
The Megaminx, which has 12 faces and 50 moving parts, is significantly more intricate than the classic Rubik's Cube with six sides and 20 movable pieces. Mr Grainger achieved the record during an official WCA competition, which drew over 2 lakh speedcubing enthusiasts from around the world.
"I was proud to achieve this record because it was something I had been working toward for a long time. It was such a joy and relief after so many failed attempts in competitions. I hope to improve further and, one day, break the world record," Mr Grainger shared at the time.
