Sri Lankan Navy on Monday thwarted a Sea Tiger attack by destroying a LTTE boat which approached the coastal area of the 'No Fire Zone' off Mullaitivu coast and killed four rebels.
"The Sri Lanka Navy's Fast Attack Craft and elite Special Boat Squadron (SBS) thwarted an LTTE attack on ground troops in the seas off Mullaittivu early on Monday morning," the defence ministry said in a statement.
The naval troops intercepted two LTTE boats around 0430 hours and completely destroyed one LTTE boat and inflicted heavy damages on the other.
The intercepted LTTE boats had been on a mission to mount attacks on the advancing ground troops operating in the front lines when the Naval troops engaged them killing four sea tiger cadres.
"The round-the-clock vigilance maintained by alert Naval troops on continuous Naval patrol close to the now-fast-diminishing enemy stronghold, has been instrumental in thwarting LTTE's last-ditch desperate 'Sea Tiger' attacks on ground troops," it said.
The Navy's patrol craft have been able to inflict heavy enemy cadre and vessel losses on the LTTE sea tigers on three consecutive occasions, it said.
