A series of terror attacks hit Brussels this morning with explosions at the airport and near a metro station. At least 30 people have died and more than 100 were injured in the attacks. A top Belgian official said the two explosions at the airport were a suicide attack.

Brussels Attacker Shouted In Arabic, I Carried Out 5 Dead People: Witness
A witness said he heard shouts in Arabic shortly before two blasts struck the packed airport departure lounge. Pictures on social media showed smoke rising from the terminal building through shattered windows and passengers fleeing down a slipway, some still hauling their bags.
US President Barack Obama, who is in Cuba for an official visit, has been briefed about the Brussels attacks that killed dozens of people. The White House has said that US officials are in contact with Belgian officials about the explosions at the Brussels airport and subway system.


Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has called the Brussels attacks a 'black day' for Belgium.

Prime Minister Michel has said that the "blind, violent and cowardly" attacks on Brussels airport and the metro system today were a "black day" for the country and had left many dead.

"This is a day of tragedy, a black day," Mr Michel said on national television, with the death toll put at 21 so far and expected to rise further.


French President Francois Hollande said that today's attacks in Brussels has "hit the whole of Europe".

"Though the attacks are in Brussels, the whole of Europe has been hit," Mr Hollande said in a statement, urging Europe to take "vital steps in the face of the seriousness of the threat."

The Belgian capital was out put on maximum terror alert and all of public transport throughout the city shut down. At the Zaventem Airport, the blasts collapsed ceilings in the departure hall and left pools of blood amid splintered signs and abandoned luggage.
The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Belgium, which was planned for later this month, will go ahead as scheduled.

"Prime Minister Modi will hold the bilateral summit with Belgium. The Prime Minister will then proceed to Washington where he will attend the Nuclear Summit on March 31," said MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup


Update: At least 20 people died and several were injured in the attacks, according to local media.

10 people may have been killed in an explosion on a metro train in Brussels on Tuesday, Belgian broadcaster VTM said, without giving more details.

The explosion happened as the train arrived at metro station during the morning rush hour, several other Belgian media reported but did not confirm the number of casualties.

Near the entrance to the Maelbeek subway station, not far from the headquarters of the European Union, rescue workers have set up a makeshift treatment center in a local pub. Dazed and shocked morning travelers streamed from the metro entrances as police tried to set up a security cordon.

"The metro was leaving Maelbeek station for metro when there was a really loud explosion," said Alexandre Brans, 32, wiping blood from his face. "It was panic everywhere. There were a lot of people in the metro."

First responders ran through the street outside with two people on stretchers, their clothes badly torn.

The explosions happened only days after Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the November 13 Paris attacks that killed 130 people, was arrested in Brussels.

Zach Mouzoun, a passenger who arrived on a flight from Geneva about 10 minutes before the first blast at the Zaventem airport in Brussels, told a local television channel that the second, louder explosion brought down ceilings and ruptured pipes, mixing water with blood from victims.

"It was atrocious. The ceilings collapsed," he said. "There was blood everywhere, injured people, bags everywhere."

"We were walking in the debris. It was a war scene," he said.

Two explosions were heard at Brussels airport early on Tuesday morning and Belgian media said several people were injured."
Brussels Airport is cancelling flights and evacuating the airport area, it said on its Twitter account following two explosions at the airport on Tuesday morning.

"Don't come to the airport - airport is being evacuated. Avoid the airport area. Flights have been cancelled," the airport said..

Brussels Airport serves over 23 million passengers a year.

Shots were fired and words in Arabic shouted before two explosisions on Tuesday in the departure hall of Brussels airport, reports Belgan news agency.


Belgian media said rail traffic to the airport was suspended. There was no immediate official comment on the cause of the attack.

On March 19, the prime surviving suspect for  November's  Paris attacks was shot in the leg and captured during a police raid in Brussels, ending an intensive four-month manhunt.

Salah Abdeslam told investigators he planned to blow himself up at a sports stadium with fellow Islamic State militants but changed his mind.

The gun and bomb attacks in Paris at a football stadium, bars and a concert hall killed 130 people and marked the deadliest militant assault in Europe since 2004.

Social media showed pictures of smoke rising from the departure hall where all windows had been shattered by the blast. Passengers were seen running away down a slipway from the departure lounge.

Sky News television's Alex Rossi, at the scene, said he heard two "very, very loud explosions".

"I could feel the building move. There was also dust and smoke as well...I went towards where the explosion came from and there were people coming out looking very dazed and shocked."

"The thinking here is that it is some kind of terrorist attack - that hasn't been verified by any of the authorities here at the airport."
